Many companies try to fit too much onto a page, making it confusing and cluttered.
At every stage of development we ask 'how does this feature help a visitor make a decision to buy'
If the answer is "It Doesn't" then it shouldn't be on the site.
Every industry has technical jargon and terms.
Don't assume everyone knows what a "BakerMaker 3000 XL with articulated spline" is or does.
Keep the language as simple as possible.
It might surprise you but 1 in 5 adults in the UK have the reading age of a 12 year old.
Don't alienate them with complex, 200 word long paragraphs.
Stick to small and simple points instead.
Font size and spacing
Too many websites have tiny text or not enough spacing between lines.
The easier your site is to read the longer people will stay.
You will notice we use large fonts, have plenty of spaces between lines and paragraphs and that each line is not too long.
If you want to see how easy your site is to read we recommend trying The Hemingway App (opens in new window).
We aim for a reading age of grade 7 or less (this page is grade 5).
We do this to include as many people as possible in the conversation.
Earlier we said that it takes people less than a second to form an opinion of your company.
The other thing to consider is they are likely looking at several websites to find a product or service.
Most websites are boring and look exactly the same, we see this as an opportunity to stand out from the crowd!
By doing things slightly differently (like our site) you can leave a lasting impression in people's minds.
It also lets you express a bit of personality in crowded market places that gives you an edge over the competition.
